In the eastern part of the state, the Federals followed the Confederates through Raleigh. Many of the Confederate troops camped in Greensboro and High Point. The two army commanders met at the Bennett Farm near Durham for several days in late April 1865. They eventually worked out the details that led to the largest surrender of Confederate forces during the war. Almost ninety thousand Confederate soldiers were paroled and sent toward their homes across the South. The event is remembered at the Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham.

For a brief time, while the commanders were working out the surrender details, North Carolina served as the capital of the Confederacy. Confederate president Jefferson Davis and his cabinet arrived in Greensboro on April 11. After remaining for a few days, his party moved south, passing through Lexington, Salisbury and Concord. They arrived in Charlotte on April 19 and set up offices in the newspaper building. When the terms between the armies were settled, making no mention of the disposition of civil officials, Davis held one final meeting of the Confederate cabinet at the Phifer home and then left. With a cavalry escort and a few of the cabinet members, Jefferson departed Charlotte on April 26, crossing over the Catawba River and into South Carolina.
